In 1893, 2 years after the establishment of the National Forest System, the area was designated as the Grand Canyon Forest Reserve. The Grand Canyon region has played a central role in America’s conservation history. The area supports remarkable geology and a diversity of wildlife and plants that flourish in its vast and well-connected ecosystem. In addition to its profound historical, cultural, and religious significance, the Grand Canyon region is known around the world for containing some of the greatest natural wonders on the planet. For example, the Havasupai call it baaj nwaavjo, or “where Indigenous peoples roam.” To the Hopi, it is i’tah kukveni, or “our ancestral footprints.” In English, we call the canyon that lies at the center of this region “the Grand Canyon.” Many of the Indigenous names for the area reflect the deep interconnection between the land and its Tribal Nations. The region is described in numerous languages. Since time immemorial, many Tribes of the Southwest have lived and prayed among the canyons and plateaus of a landscape unlike any other in the world.
